Beat Patterns

This month's activity comes from the first book in our developmental music program, MUSIC ROOM.

UNIT 3 - LESSON 1:  BEAT - beat patterns
MUSICAL ELEMENT:  Beat
OBJECTIVE:  Students keep a steady beat while moving & playing to a graphic score.
ACTIVITIES:  listening, moving, playing. reading symbols
USEFUL VOCABULARY:  beat, steady beat, symbol/s, pattern
YOU WILL NEED:  CD 3
charts #11 & #12
percussion instruments - tambourines, drums, shakers, sticks
TUNING IN:  COPYCAT

Close your eyes and listen to what I play.

Teacher plays a beat pattern (eg 4 handclaps followed by 4 kneepats )

Students open eyes and repeat the pattern.

Students close eyes and teacher plays another pattern (eg 4 knee pats followed by 4 handclaps )

Students open eyes and repeat the pattern.

Do as many patterns as required, using 2 sets of 4 beats, as above. Mix percussion sounds - handclaps, knee pats, foot stamps, finger clicks etc)

REVISION

One, Two, Three - Mother Caught a Flea
using knee/clap ostinato (unit 2, lesson 2)

Now try chanting the rhyme while following the beat pattern on chart # 11

4 claps One, two, three - Mother caught a flea
4 foot-stamps Put it in a teapot, and made a cup of tea
4 knee-pats Flea jumped out, Mother gave a shout
4 jumps In came Dad with his shirt hanging out!

LESSON FOCUS: BEAT PATTERNS (graphic scores)

Now use the same beat pattern ( graphic score ) for other nursery rhymes, as suggested by the students.

For example

4 claps Baa baa blacksheep, have you any wool
4 foot-stamps Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full
4 knee-pats One for the master and one for the dame
4 jumps And one for the little boy who lives down the lane

CONDUCTOR

Don't forget to use students as conductors whenever there is an opportunity.
