    Planet Suite

    Students work in six groups, creating a piece of music for the following planets:

    Mercury        Venus        Mars
    Jupiter        Saturn        Neptune
  • Discuss the planets and possible sounds
  • Mercury is fast and hot - the winged messenger;
  • Venus is the planet of love and peace;
  • Mars is the red planet - bringer of war;
  • Jupiter is the bringer of jollity;
  • Saturn is the bringer of old age and wisdom;
  • Neptune is the mystic planet - far away, cold and mysterious

    Students create their planet music and perform for each other and discuss the works, commenting on ideas that work and making suggestions for improvement.

    They can use a variety of sounds when creating their piece.

    Students graphically notate their works.

    Students record their works.

    Students listen to the CD track Planet Suite by David Billings, comparing the musical excerpts with their own pieces.

    Note: on the audio track one planet is purposely out of order (Mars)
